Raiders in the fast lane on playoff path.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)
The Raiders became the trendy Super Bowl pick sometime around November, when they moved into double-digits in the victory column. But anyone who has watched this team for years winced at the concept that the December-fading Raiders could be considered a lock for anything before the winter solstice.
But the Raiders survived December. They won the AFC West. And trendy just became realistic.
After the first weekend of NFL playoffs, one thing is clear. The road to the Super Bowl is wide open. And the Raiders have merged into the fast lane.
The defending Super Bowl champions? The Rams are gone.
The coach considered the smartest in the NFL? Mike Shanahan is gone.
The quarterback considered the league's new conquering hero? Peyton Manning is gone.
Both teams from last year's NFC championship game? The Rams and Tampa Bay, gone and gone.
