NEW ORLEANS _ Sorry, but I couldn't wait. Couldn't wait for Tuesday night's Sugar Bowl game to play out, and then wait some more for Wednesday's Orange Bowl, and then wait again for the final polls.
So I took it upon myself to find out Monday if Miami's Hurricanes would end up with a share of college football's national championship.
This is an exclusive, by the way. The teams don't even know this yet.
The final pre-bowl news conferences of UM coach Butch Davis and Florida Gator counterpart Steve Spurrier certainly shed no light. Spurrier wore a necktie on which gold alligators capered. Neither coach guaranteed a win. Both talked a lot about their players having on "game faces" now.
I swung by the Decatur Mask Company to see about buying a game face.
"We don't carry those," the clerk told me, "but look over here."
She pointed to a porcelain Mardi Gras mask festooned with purple and yellow feathers, which I am wearing as I type these words.
