NEW ORLEANS _ The phone calls from old friends came on Saturday night.
Cris Carter rang Jake Reed's cell phone not long after the New Orleans Saints beat St. Louis 31-28 to set up this Saturday's NFC playoff game between the Saints and Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Orlando Thomas spoke to Reed as well.
Reed, a veteran wide receiver in his first season with the Saints (11-6), politely accepted the calls from his pals on the other side. But the conversations were quick. And there won't be any more for at least five days.
"I'm not going to do much talking this week," said Reed, who played for Minnesota from 1991-99. "It's war time. Talking is for the off-season, after the game. But right now, I'm not talking about this and that."
During the past few seasons, Reed was as close as you can be this time of year with Carter, the Vikings Pro Bowl wide receiver, and Thomas, a Vikings safety since 1995.
From 1994-97, Carter and Reed became the first receiving duo in NFL history to each record 1,000 receiving yards in four consecutive seasons.
