MIAMI _ He has saved a football program and killed a football profession. He is way too good, way too fast. He is the grinning face of all that's evil.
At least if you're unfortunate enough to be stuck in one of those exciting, new jobs, like Pete Carroll.
He is Bob Stoops, the man who ruined college coaching for everyone.
Now, they all will be expected to do this, to take the mundane and make magic with it, to shake awake a team dazed by failure, to turn into No. 1 a program that most recently had been compared to, well, No. 2.
And they will be expected to do all of this now, right now. Stoops has rebuilt Oklahoma football in roughly the same time it takes to construct a Del Taco.
"When we came here I said the expectations should be higher, and they are now," he said. "Everyone should set their expectations high. But you also have to be ready to deal with things if you get what you wish for."
The Sooners wished for one bright star and now are dealing with being a victory from claiming the entire galaxy. They will meet Florida State for the national championship Wednesday in the Orange Bowl.
