PHILADELPHIA _ If the Philadelphia Eagles are to break this spell the New York Giants hold over them, they will have to do so without running back Stanley Pritchett.
The team learned yesterday that Pritchett fractured his left tibia in Sunday's wild-card game victory over Tampa Bay. Pritchett was hurt after catching a pass. Two Buccaneers defenders tackled him, and his leg appeared to have gotten caught beneath one of them. The injury originally was diagnosed as a sprained left knee.
Pritchett had been one of the valuable free-agent acquisitions the Eagles made during the off-season, along with running back and return man Brian Mitchell, linebacker Carlos Emmons, right tackle Jon Runyan, and long snapper Mike Bartrum. After struggling to figure out the complex West Coast offense, Pritchett became a key commodity, using his versatility to help the Eagles after Duce Staley suffered a season-ending foot injury.
Pritchett rushed for 225 yards this season and caught 25 passes for 193 yards as both a tailback and a fullback. He helped the Eagles come from behind to win, 26-23, in overtime over the Pittsburgh Steelers during Week 11 with probably his best game of the season. Pritchett ran for 49 yards and had 30 receiving yards in that game, including a big reception.
Pritchett's injury makes the Eagles' running-back situation more fragile. Darnell Autry missed Sunday's game with a high left-ankle sprain. Coach Andy Reid said yesterday that Autry's status for the Giants game was questionable.
"Well, we'll go back to the drawing board," Reid said, acknowledging that Pritchett's absence left the Eagles without a backup fullback. "Any of the backs could play any of those positions."
The other option for the Eagles is rookie running back Thomas Hamner, who has not played a down this season. Reid said the team has liked the rookie's progress and that he would consider making him one of the 45 players active on Sunday. Hamner spent much of the season on the practice squad and has not been activated for a game.
