MIAMI _ Football and politics don't mix exactly.
But sports fans and local leaders say a couple of nationally televised college football games tonight in New Orleans and Wednesday at Pro Player Stadium will take some of the bite out of the negative fallout from the Elian Gonzalez saga and the presidential election controversy.
The Miami Hurricanes take on the Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl, renewing a rivalry that has been dormant for 13 years. The Florida State Seminoles are pitted against the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl _ the Bowl Championship Series title game _ a day later.
And that strong Florida influence, they say, can do nothing but help repair the damage to the state's image.
``We're certainly going to be front and center on every sports page in the country,'' said Miami-Dade county manager Merrett Stierheim. ``That's got to be positive.''
Said Nikki Grossman, who heads the Fort Lauderdale Area Visitors and Convention Bureau: ``When any of our teams are in bowl games, you get something you don't have to pay cash for. You get advertising.''
It's the sort of positive publicity that could help change perceptions of people like the Skriners, Oklahoma fans arriving for the Orange Bowl on Monday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
