JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ The Gator Bowl was billed as a glimpse of the future of the quarterback position and Michael Vick and Woodrow Dantzler left no doubt it's evolving into a more advanced species.
Virginia Tech's Vick didn't put on the physical freak show he did in last season's national championship game but still led the No. 6 Hokies to a 41-20 victory over Clemson on Monday, throwing for 205 yards and a touchdown and running for another 19 yards and a score.
Dantzler held his own in the battle, passing for 180 yards, including a touchdown, and running for a game-high 81 yards, pushing him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
"There aren't many guys who can get out of trouble and throw it as well as Dantzler and Vick," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "There's nothing like playing with quarterbacks like that."
Vick didn't waste any time in making his presence felt. Clemson ran three plays for 6 yards to open the game, then dribbled the snap back to punter Jamie Somaini. Lee Suggs recovered at the Clemson 23-yard line.
Vick found Jarrett Ferguson for a touchdown on the next play.
"That loosened them up," the 6-foot-1, 214-pound sophomore quarterback said.
