DETROIT _ On Wednesday night, college football fans will watch Josh Heupel and Chris Weinke, for one reason: They have no choice.
If you want to watch the Bowl Championship Series national championship game, you have to watch Oklahoma's Heupel and Florida State's Weinke, 1-2 in the BCS rankings and 2-1 in the Heisman Trophy vote.
There are more spectacular players out there, but you can't watch them. Heupel and Weinke won't let you. They forced everybody's hand by winning.
Winning is what they do best and winning is what matters, so either the duck-throwing Heupel and duck-walking Weinke will end the season atop the college football world.
Heupel made it to the Orange Bowl because he and Oklahoma went undefeated. Weinke made it because he and Florida State lost just once _ and the BCS computers liked the Seminoles more than they liked Miami.
Yet with both quarterbacks, there is still the suspicion that the goods aren't quite there. Heupel's throwing motion is goofy. Weinke plays for a team that finished 11 straight seasons ranked in the nation's top 4 before Weinke started a game.
But their teams know how valuable they are. When Florida State played Miami in October, Weinke was nursing a sprained foot and the Seminoles didn't know if he could play. FSU offensive coordinator Mark Richt asked Weinke before the game how the foot felt. Weinke said: "It doesn't matter, does it?"
