PONTIAC, Mich. _ The restructuring of the Detroit Lions is under way, and coach Gary Moeller is starting at the top.
Offensive coordinator Sylvester Croom and defensive coordinator Larry Peccatiello _ along with receivers coach Jerry Sullivan _ have been fired.
Moeller could not be reached for comment Monday, but a source familiar with the situation said he does not believe Moeller has settled on replacements for any of the fired coaches.
Croom, 46, had been highly criticized for his conservative play-calling during his four seasons as offensive coordinator. He was on the original staff hired by former coach Bobby Ross in 1997.
The offense's shortcomings _ the Lions finished 27th overall in total yardage in the NFL _ probably cost Croom and Sullivan their jobs.
Moeller took an active role in the play-calling during his five years as the head coach at Michigan, and it is believed he is looking for a more creative, aggressive style of offense than the power game in which Ross and Croom believed.
