MIAMI_Twenty five seniors, including Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke and 13 other starters, will trot off the field at Pro Player Stadium on Wednesday night. What happens in their wake is a mystery as intriguing as the search that will one day follow Bobby Bowden's retirement.

Is this the end of the dynasty?

"It is question you never ask in Tallahassee, and it is the question everybody is going to ask," Sports Illustrated's Ivan Maisel said.

An NCAA-record run of 14 10-win seasons and top-five AP finishes will be at risk of ending following the departure of Weinke, starting tailback Travis Minor, leading receiver Snoop Minnis and three starters on the offensive line. The Seminoles' defense could lose six of its top eight tacklers as well as its entire starting secondary, if junior Chris Hope enters the NFL Draft.

Predictions that the fall of the Bowden Empire is at hand prompts laughs from veteran players. They've heard it before. FSU lost 15 starters, including three All-Americans, from its 1996 team. Twelve starters, including the entire backfield and Heisman winner Charlie Ward, had to be replaced following the 1993 championship season.

"People didn't think we were going to be all that great in '97, but we went 11-1 and we were just a few points from playing for the national championship," linebacker Jean Jeune said. "So I never doubt this program."

Many veteran media members, including Tony Barnhart of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ESPN, aren't ready to declare the dynasty over.
