ATLANTA _ Growing up in bordering communities on Long Island in the 1970s, Paul Hewitt and Matt Doherty never met.
Now the two can't stop bumping into each other.
Hewitt, the first-year coach at Georgia Tech, and Doherty, in his first season at North Carolina, will make their ACC debuts together Tuesday night when the 14th-ranked Tar Heels visit Alexander Memorial Coliseum at 8 p.m.
It was only a few months ago that Doherty and Hewitt hooked up in the NIT, with Doherty's Notre Dame team knocking off Hewitt's Siena squad in the second round. Since then, Hewitt was hired to replace the retired Bobby Cremins, while Doherty took over for Bill Guthridge at Doherty's alma mater after Roy Williams and several other Carolina alumni turned down the Heels.
At the preseason basketball meetings in Greensboro, N.C. in October, Hewitt and Doherty sat next to each other, chatting amicably and comparing notes on their first-year programs. So it's seems only fitting that the two newcomers will jump into ACC fire together.
Said Hewitt: ``It's a nice experience to go into the game against North Carolina and also to play against someone I have respect for.''
