La Favorite, Donizetti's biggest success at the Opera de Paris, was known in the twentieth century primarily through an Italian revision that Donizetti himself labeled a "horror." La Favorite's libretto, in which the king's mistress is married off to a monk who jilts her right after their wedding when he learns of her former royal position, scandalized the Italian censors; with self-serving zealotry, they mangled it into La Favorita.
So this recording of the "original French version," based on Ricordi's critical edition (edited by Rebecca Harris-Warrick), has the difficult task of presenting what is practically a new opera to ears already familiar with many of its finest moments.
