CHICAGO _ How realignment in 2002 could affect the NFC West:

The current NFC West is the silliest division, an embarrassment to mapmakers and anyone who recalls geography as a required grade-school subject.

In the new NFL alignments, the NFC West suffers the most radical retooling. Only the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams survive, and that's in deference to the Rams' former home.

The Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints are much more suited to a new NFC South _ along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, out of place in the NFC Central.

The Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks would join the 49ers and Rams. Because …
