LEXINGTON, Ky. _ The Twin Spires are looming a little larger today.

Churchill Downs Inc. on Thursday announced it is in negotiations to acquire Arlington International Racecourse outside Chicago.

Arlington, which reopened May 14 with live racing after a21Z2-year absence, is owned by privately held Duchossois Industries.

Churchill issued a statement about the negotiations yesterday, cautioning "there are no assurances" the deal will be completed. Churchill Downs Inc. spokesman Karl Schmitt declined to give details on the negotiations.

With the addition of Arlington, Churchill would dominate the Midwestern racing and simulcasting scene with Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ellis Park in Henderson, Kentucky Downs in Franklin, and Hoosier Park in Anderson, Ind.
