The key psychological difference between religious and nonreligious people is that the former crave interdependence while the latter have a strong desire to be self-reliant and independent. That's according to a new Ohio State University study. "The writings of many religions express the desire to be one with God, to merge your self into a greater reality," the study's coauthor says. In contrast, independent-minded people "may dislike being in need of anyone, even God."
