CHICAGO _ Bears personnel director Mark Hatley was saved from himself Saturday. He drafted the right guy because his guy was gone.

The right guy was New Mexico linebacker Brian Urlacher. He certainly won't make Chicago forget Butkus and Singletary, but he'll make the rest of the NFL remember this franchise was once known for linebackers who move and hit.

Urlacher is the next evolution: a big, tough middle linebacker who'll be able to outrun some backs and receivers. He'll start immediately on the strong side, an easier position to learn. He'll wind up in the middle of things.
