Dale Earnhardt Jr. made the DIRECTV 500 historic, capturing his first Winston Cup victory with an overpowering performance before an announced sellout crowd of 223,000.
The 25-year-old son of seven-time Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt Sr., Dale Jr. won in only his 12th series start. His father's first victory came in his 16th start, and Tony Stewart, who put together the finest rookie season in history last year, won in his 25th race.
``I'm kind of overwhelmed by what's happened here,'' Earnhardt Jr. said after beating Jeff Burton's Ford by 5.92 seconds. ``We practiced and qualified well (fourth), but I didn't get my hopes up because we'd done that everywhere.''
