Mar. 8--ALEXANDRIA, Va.--Robert E. Lee's historic boyhood home, among Old Town Alexandria's most popular tourist attractions, has closed its doors after the foundation that operated the house as a museum sold it to a local couple who plan to move in and live there.
The Charlottesville-based Lee-Jackson Foundation announced the sale of the 4,500-square-foot, three-story brick house to Mark and Ann Kington of Alexandria on Friday. The museum closed the same day. The purchase price was undisclosed, but city assessors have valued the property at $1.1 million.
