Hawaii's position as a major vacation destination for Asian tourists is at the hub of American International Airways' decision to make the island the centerpiece of a series of strategic cargo links with Pacific Rim airlines.
"What's important for us is forming alliances with Asian combination carriers," said Beti Ward, chief executive of AIA, which has a major freight-handling facility at Honolulu International Airport.
