LOS ANGELES _ Despite the advent of promising drugs that can dramatically slow the progression of AIDS, about half of all adults infected with the virus that causes the disease do not receive regular medical care and most of those who do get regular treatment are already in the disease's advanced stages, a nationwide study has found.
The study, published in Thursday's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, also found that while the costs of treating the disease are high for individuals, amounting to some $20,000 a year, total expenditures on HIV care represents less than 1 percent of all direct personal health care expenditures in the United States.
