SANTA ANA, Calif. _ University of California Irvine researchers conducted unapproved experiments on cancer patients in the mid-1990s, including injecting a young Miami girl with an unauthorized drug, according to internal university documents.
A university investigation concluded one or more researchers at its Chao Cancer Center and another UCI lab treated patients with unapproved doses of experimental vaccine, grew human tissue cells without the required federal and university authorization and injected an experimental compound that was not approved for human use into the brain of a Miami girl dying of a brain tumor.
The panel did not address whether the treatment contributed to her death a few days later but said the UCI doctor who treated her failed to report her death to the proper authorities.
