Nov. 12--The chairman of the Miami Herald Publishing Co., David Lawrence Jr., will appear before the Miami-Dade Commission next month to ask it to pass a countywide gay-rights ordinance.

Lawrence received an award Saturday night at the Dade Human Rights Foundation annual dinner in Miami for his work on behalf of the gay community. During his acceptance speech, he told an audience of about 500 that he would address the commission on behalf of the controversial ordinance.
