NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Jun. 16--More than a third of the 600 employees whom Newport News Shipbuilding had planned to lay off Monday have been transferred to new work, while 170 more will keep their jobs a month longer.
And yard spokeswoman Jerri Fuller Dickseski said the 200 workers whose last day was Monday should be rehired by next spring.
The workers received 60-day notices April 15. The 230 who got reprieves were notified by their general foremen last week, she said. At the same time, the yard sent written notification to those whose layoffs were delayed.
"The company worked extremely hard to be able to reduce the number of people affected by the layoff," Dickseski said. "A lot of people worked very hard."
