Jun. 2--North Carolina broke its record for job-wooing tax breaks -- set less than two months ago -- with a $155.2 million offer announced Monday to bring 300 top-paying jobs to the state's poor northeast.

As soon as Wednesday, the N.C. Senate could begin debating the incentive package designed to win a $300 million Nucor steel mill for rural Hertford County. The steelmaker, based in Charlotte, would start the mill next year and employ 300 people at an average annual wage of $60,000 -- more than triple Hertford's average manufacturing wage.

"This is truly an historic day," Gov. Jim Hunt said at a news conference in Charlotte Monday morning. "It promises a new day for northeastern North Carolina ... where many people are literally dirt…
