The achievements of the Ismailis have for centuries been obscured by the myth that they were a band of murderous brigands. Dr. Peter Willey, who has spent 40 years studying this remarkable sect, sets the record straight

The year 1997 was certainly a milestone for me. Not only did I celebrate my 75th birthday, but after a two month expedition to Iran during one of the hottest summers the country has experienced in recent years (the average temperature was well over 40 [degrees] Celsius). I was able to complete research on the castles of the Assassins I had first began in 1959.

I can now finish writing the two books I have long planned, during almost 40 ...
