WASHINGTON _ Between 2,000 and 3,000 lung cancer deaths every year are caused by radon, federal researchers said Thursday, in the most authoritative statement to date on the risks posed by the naturally occurring gas.
The study should settle much of the controversy surrounding the radon-cancer link, an issue that once provoked a mild national hysteria. Although radon has long been thought a health hazard, the extent of the danger has been elusive.
To the Environmental Protection Agency, sponsor of the study, the conclusions justify the EPA's policy of recommending radon testing _ however costly _ for all buildings.
