Dec. 5--A decade ago, Kirkwood Circle and the Sailors project promised to bring more high-rise, upscale living to the Country Club Plaza.
The original versions of those projects died because of a variety of factors, least of which being a harsh real estate recession. But even after the economic recovery, apartment development in and around the Plaza stood still while flourishing in other parts of the Kansas City area.
Until now.
Projects planned or under construction could add almost 1,200 new residential units to the Plaza area, including a revised Kirkwood Circle plan and a new approach to the former Sailors project. Although they fail to reach the heights of earlier apartment proposals -- the Sailors project included a 53-story building, for example -- they could buttress a renewed and growing interest in Kansas City's urban core.
