Homing in on Carl Sams. (nature photographer Carl R. Sams II)
There is the popular picture of the nature photographer, the creature we secretly wish to be when we imagine chucking it all to photograph birds. This is the thoughtful but practically non-verbal loner who can read the mind of a chickadee or bull moose from fifty yards. This photographer blends perfectly into the woods and fields and maybe imperfectly in society, and can happily manage to spend days or weeks working without encountering another human being. This is the sort of national magazine photographer made so famous a few years back by a popular romantic novel set in Iowa. You know, Clint Eastwood played him in the movie version.
