MIAMI _ Florida weight-loss patients will not be able to get prescriptions for the diet drug combination fen-phen for the next three months under an unprecedented emergency ban approved Monday.

The state Board of Medicine, testing its regulatory reach, declared the dual dispensing of fenfluramine and phentermine to be an immediate health hazard, citing a North Miami Beach patient's fatal heart failure and numerous reports of health problems among people on the regimen.

Among the anecdotal accounts gathered during recent state hearings: 25 patients of one Bonita Springs, Fla., weight-loss doctor revealed signs of heart valve problems, out of 63 who underwent echocardiogram tests.
