Aug. 27--An investor group may be close to buying Charlotte's landmark McDonald's Cafeteria and next-door hotel, city documents and sources say.

The group includes former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt and other prominent African-Americans, according to sources working with the investors. If it goes through, the deal would salvage part of the late John McDonald's Beatties Ford development.

A sale would end years of speculation about the future of the troubled development, which also includes the failed amusement venture Fun City. Its future has been in doubt at least since 1993, when the McDonald family began trying to refinance the properties after ambitious expansion in the 1980s. …
