Aug. 27--There is some good news for US WEST.

Name recognition counts for plenty as telephone companies begin competing in a deregulated market, according to a new survey.

But it also appears that US WEST may have some fence-mending to do with customers in Utah and 13 the other states it serves to keep them from hooking up with another phone provider.

J.D. Power and Associates, a Southern California-based marketing firm, ranked 13 of the country's largest telephone companies, including US WEST, for customer satisfaction after interviewing more than 15,000 Americans.
