May 1--Hoping to generate long-term plans to keep downtown Duluth vital, the Greater Downtown Council and city officials will host an economic summit with business leaders and an outside consultant May 28.

The summit will be led by Hyett Palma, an consulting group from Alexandria, Va., that specializes in helping cities develop their downtowns.

Duluth Mayor Gary Doty said the summit is designed to help the city develop a five-year vision for stimulating economic growth in the central business district. As for what that vision should be -- anything goes, Doty says.

"We're not going in with any preconceived ideas," he said.
