GULFPORT, Miss.--Apr. 1--A New Orleans-based telecommunications company wants to make Gulfport the newest link in its planned multi-state network.

American MetroComm Corp. is seeking a franchise to hook up the city to its fiber-optic "backbone" that eventually will branch out to Texas, Alabama and Florida.

The Gulfport City Council is expected to award the company a franchise at its April 8 meeting. The company has made one pitch to the council and has met with Mayor Ken Combs.
