In an unusual action aimed at preventing some of the millions of unintended pregnancies that occur each year in this country, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Tuesday published an announcement declaring that extra doses of certain birth control pills can be safely taken soon after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
The FDA asked drug companies to come forward to relabel and market the pills as ``emergency contraception'' so women will finally become aware of what scientists discovered 20 years ago.
``We are optimistic that if women and physicians understand there is another form of contraception available, they will use it and it will help reduce ... unintended pregnancies,'' said FDA Deputy Commissioner Mary Pendergast.
