Oct. 26--Before 80 million people watching last season's football playoffs - those who watched the commercials, anyhow - a Nintendo employee credited IBM for helping it achieve "our most successful launch ever."

The commercial never mentioned the Charlotte team that helped Nintendo ship 1 million Super Mario Bros. 3 games directly to stores in one weekend. Fortunately for Worldwide Chain Store Systems Inc., it has no identity crisis with the people in its field.

The IBM subsidiary, which is based in Chicago but has its largest operation in Charlotte, is one of Big Blue's little-known success stories. From just $10 million in revenue in 1992, when IBM acquired it, WCSS projects it could grow to as much as $150 million by the end of the decade.
