Sep. 22--Customers aren't just No. 1 to retailer Barbara Rackes, they also are unpredictable and easy to lose. Rackes, president and chief executive officer of Rackes of Columbia, a chain of upscale women's clothing stores, said told a Rock Hill chamber group Wednesday that retailers must survey, study and telephone customers to learn their wants and needs.

"You never know enough about your customer," Rackes said. "You never own her," she said, using feminine pronouns to mean customers of both sexes.

"There is no loyalty and every customer is earned one at a time," Rackes said.
