    BETHESDA, Md. _ One of science's most coveted prizes _ discovery of a mutated gene that causes hereditary breast cancer _ was claimed Wednesday by researchers in Utah and North Carolina, who announced that they had successfully pinpointed the gene in several families that carry the disease. 
    The discovery is expected to lead to a test for inherited breast cancer. It could also create excruciating dilemmas for the women found to carry the gene. The finding was confirmed at a press conference at the National Institutes of Health, which has helped fund a competitive, four-year search for the gene in genetic laboratories across the United States and abroad. 
    Researchers from the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS) in North Carolina, who made the discovery in collaboration with Utah geneticist Mark Skolnick, said that while they were excited to…
