    Some people, and not just those whose soap operas were preempted, have set up an outcry against the super-coverage of the O.J. Simpson case, saying it amounts to ``trying him in the media.'' Lay off, they say, and let him have a fair trial. 
    A fair trial? That is something that news coverage, by keeping a close eye on the handling of the case, could conceivably help ensure. A fair trial is not the chief concern of the lawyers involved. What they want is victory. If the battle between the two sets of lawyers, each determined to win, produces justice, then let our system be praised. But that wasn't what the lawyers were after.
