LEXINGTON, Ky.--Apr. 21--March madness could have been applied to more than the national college basketball tournament last month. It would have gone nicely with the car business too, which had record sales. Among the hottest contenders: Ford trucks, Chrysler Corp., and Mitsubishi, which had their best month ever; and Toyota, Lexus, GM trucks and Mazda, which had their best March ever.

Those closest to the industry attribute that strong showing to coming out of the pent-up winter doldrums, the improving economy, and a weak March last year.
