    FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Larry Smith, former congressman, is trying desperately to avoid becoming Larry Smith, former lawyer. 
    On Monday, Smith delivered an impassioned 27-minute speech during a Florida Bar trial in hopes of preserving his law license. The Bar wants to disbar him for the two felony convictions that sank his political career and put him in prison for three months. 
    But Smith says his actions warrant a license suspension _ not disbarment. In his defense, he called in top political and legal guns as character witnesses. Then he closed with a personal plea for mercy.
