NEW YORK--Apr. 11--An environmental battle is raging that could cut into the $1.6 billion Canadian forest products export market to Europe that moves through Vancouver and its satellite British Columbia ports each year.
Fears are spreading that the recent suspension of two wood pulp contracts for Vancouver Island forest products by two United Kingdom shippers could escalate into other cancellations in environmentally sensitive Europe.
Greenpeace UK and Greenpeace Canada reportedly have joined forces to pressure European shippers to refuse to import any of the approximately 90 percent of BC's products from "old growth" forests.
"We need to change our forestry practices to stay competitive in the world marketplace…
