Apr. 7--Nearly 1,000 Sacramento area truck drivers and office workers stayed off the job Wednesday as the trucking industry's first nationwide strike in 15 years took hold.

While the strike is expected to halt shipment of about 15 percent of the country's dry goods, area businesses saw little if any disruption of commercial activity over the short term.

"Depending on how long it lasts, it could be weeks before we feel any effects, " said Carolyn Brookter, spokeswoman for Target Stores.

Like other retailers and manufacturers, Target turns to other means of transportation if necessary, Brookter said.
