The Senate's defeat Tuesday of a proposed constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget was the right outcome. The nation isn't ready for such a draconian measure.
But we'd all be much better off if the battle had been closer _ if backers of the amendment had held the other senators' feet to the fire and forced them to make significant concessions to win.
