Five years after Wynne Hemmingway was seriously injured in a car accident, she still felt spacey, forgetful and tired.
She also felt a strange burning in her belly. Doctors said it was the result of nerve damage.
Doctors also said she should just learn to live with the problems.
So Hemmingway decided to look for a non-conventional cure.
After talking with friends familiar with alternative medicine, Hemmingway made an appointment with Dr. Gladys McGarey, a holistic physician in Scottsdale, Ariz.
``The fact that she's an M.D. made a big difference to me,'' said Hemmingway, who is the Arizona director of a national mental-health program called Rational Self-Help.
McGarey asked Hemmingway about her eating habits and discovered that the 30-year-old was living on sugary junk food.
Then she tested Hemmingway for candida, a condition caused by an overabundance of yeast that creates such symptoms as fatigue, forgetfulness and indigestion.
