Dec. 22--IBM Corp. handed control of its personal computer business Tuesday to an industry outsider who has worked alongside IBM Chairman Louis Gerstner at three different companies in 20 years.

G. Richard Thoman, 49, had been president of Nabisco International Inc. for 16 months before resigning in early December. He assumes leadership of an operation worth an estimated $9 billion in 1993 revenue, according to Dataquest Inc. of San Jose, Calif. He will join IBM's Somers, N.Y., office on Jan. 3.

Thoman will become an IBM senior vice president with responsibility over four areas: IBM PC Co. - which has about 1,600 employees at IBM's Boca Raton lab; the PowerPC …
