SANTA ANA, Calif. _ Crying and nervously running her manicured pink fingernails through her hair, Kathyleen Giguere said Thursday she wishes she could trade places with her 4-month-old son, who was gnawed to death by the family's pet rat.
``My husband keeps saying he wishes it could have been him,'' Giguere said in an interview at Orange County Jail. ``I wish it could have been me.''
Giguere, 30, and her husband, Steven J. Giguere, 27, are charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of their baby, Steven Jr. The boy was bitten 110 times Aug. 26 while sleeping in the station wagon where the family was living.
The mother called her baby's death a ``freak accident,'' but declined to discuss what happened.
