JERUSALEM _ An aging Holocaust survivor and a militant political activist Sunday blocked the deportation of John Demjanjuk, demanding that Israel charge him with Nazi war crimes days after he was cleared of being the sadistic death camp guard Ivan the Terrible.
Demjanjuk, who is technically stateless, was scheduled to fly to his native Ukraine on Sunday. Last Thursday, Israel's five-member Supreme Court stunned the nation by acquitting Demjanjuk, 74, of operating the gas chambers at the Treblinka death camp.
