The overall rate of U.S. women who smoke during pregnancy significantly declined between 1990 and 2002, but 10 states reported recent increases in the number of pregnant teenagers who smoke, according to a federal report.
For the analysis, investigators collected data from birth certificates reported by 49 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (MMWR 2004;53:911-5). Data from California were not included because that state does not collect information on maternal smoking in a standardized way.
