WASHINGTON -- Pregnant women with severe sickle cell disease may develop fewer intrapartum complications if they undergo exchange transfusions during the pregnancy, Jerrie Refuerzo, M.D., said at the annual meeting of the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Refuerzo of Wayne State University, Detroit, reviewed the records of 30 pregnant women with sickle cell disease who were treated at that institution between 1997 and 2001.
