I found the opinion piece by Tom Connally, M.D., in "Health Care 2004: You Decide," offensive ("The Kerry Proposal Presented," Oct. 1, 2004, p. 11). While I am accustomed to a difference of opinion in many position statements, I do not appreciate being demeaned.
Dr. Connally used the term "irrational ideology" to describe the opinion of those who oppose embryonic stem cell research.
Do I oppose unrestricted embryonic stem cell research? Absolutely. Therefore, according to Dr. Connally, I am irrational and can only block efforts to "enhance humanity." Am I insulted? Absolutely.
I respect the opinions of those with whom I disagree, and I ask the same courtesy in return. ...
